Sample QuestionBlood PressureQuestions 1-4 are about the following passage. Lub-dub! Lub-dub! Lub-dub! This sound is made by the rapid contracting and extending of the chamber doors on the inside of the heart. This ventricular contracting injects roughly 70 milliliters of blood into a vascular system with a given volume at differing pressure. Blood pressure refers to the pressure in the arterial system and is typically taken in the brachial artery of the arm, because the pressure at different places along the circulatory route is different. Blood pressure is simply the force that the blood exerts in all directions within any given area and is the basis for the movement of blood from the heart, through the body, and back to the heart. This pressure is commonly expressed as a ratio of the systolic pressure over the diastolic pressure. The systolic pressure or "high peak" pressure takes place within the arterial system as ventricles contract and force blood into the arteries. The diastolic pressure or "low peak" pressure takes place within this arterial system just before the next ventricular contraction. An increase in blood pressure can occur if the arterial walls lose some of their elasticity with age or disease. What is the main idea of the passage?

Sample QuestionRead the email. Are the statements true (T), false (F) or not given (NG)? Hi Kate It was good to hear from you the other day. I know you’ve been really busy with the move and getting everything sorted out in your new home. I can’t wait to come and visit! I’m so glad that you enjoyed reading The Lacuna. I thought you would, as you’ve been to Mexico and the States and probably know some of the places mentioned. Whenever I read one of Barbara Kingsolver’s novels I realise that I will never be as good a writer as she is! But I can dream, can’t I? As the new school year is almost here I’ve decided to start doing some evening courses as I don’t want to get into the habit of staying at home watching TV. I’ve signed up for a new course in creative writing at the local college. The programme looks quite interesting as we will be covering different aspects of writing like poetry, biography, fiction and screen writing. The only thing I’m not looking forward to is reading my ‘work’ to the rest of the group but I suppose everyone will be feeling nervous about that. I’ve also just discovered that someone is offering drumming lessons at the community centre down the road. I was at a friend’s house recently and they had a huge drum kit in the music room. Of course I had to have a go … you know me. I’ve always wanted to be in a rock band. Wow! It was so fantastic. Luckily they don’t have any neighbours as I’m sure I made a terrible noise but at least I thought I was good! It was such fun and then, the other day, I saw a poster advertising drumming workshops locally. You pay for a course of six lessons and I guess after that you’ll know whether you want to continue or not. I’m really excited. It’s such a good way to get rid of stress and it’s quite good exercise as well. I read that they also do team-building sessions in companies so I might suggest it to my boss as morale is pretty low at the moment and a lot of people are thinking of leaving. I think it would be great to get together and just make as much noise as possible! You could suggest it to your boss too! How about you? Have you had any more thoughts about joining that photography class you were talking about? It would be a good way to meet people and I’m sure your tutor would take you out and about so you’d get to know the local area a bit better. There’s so much you can do with digital photography these days and you’ve certainly got a great camera. If we do all the courses we want to do, we’ll have no time to see one another. Perhaps we should book a date in the diary now before we become famous artists! How about next weekend? LoveAlice xKate has just moved into a new house. _ NG_The Lacuna is a work of fiction.

Sample QuestionFor young children, losing privileges for short amounts of time can be very effective. One way for this to happen is by using what is called “Time-Out.” Time-Out means time away from all those fun things in a child’s life. It is a way of disciplining your child without raising your hand or your voice. Basically, Time-Out involves having your child sit in one place for a certain amount of time. You can easily see that most kids wouldn’t like Time-Out because they would rather be doing fun things (Burke & Herron, 1996, p. 40).

Sample QuestionRead the following passage and answer the questions 1 to 5 White cement is the basic raw material for producing cement tiles and cement paint, which are used extensively in building construction. The main consumers of white cement are, therefore, cement tile and cement paint manufacturing units. These consumers, mostly in the small-scale sector, are today facing a major crisis because of a momentous increase in the price of white cement during a short period. The present annual licensed production capacity of white and gray cement in the country is approximately 3.5 lakh tonnes. The normal demand is 2-2.5 lakh tonnes. This means that there is the idle capacity to the tune of one-lakh tones or more. The price rise is, therefore, not a phenomenon arising out of inadequate production capacity but evidently, because of artificial scarcity created by the manufacturers in their self-centeredness, The main reason for the continuing spurt in cement price is its decontrol. As it is, there is stiff competition in the cement paint and tile manufacturing business. Any further price revision at this stage is bound to have a severe adverse impact on the market conditions. The Government should take adequate steps to ensure that suitable controls are brought in else it should allow the import of cement. Q1. Why is the price of cement going up?
