Sample QuestionRead the email. Are the statements true (T), false (F) or not given (NG)? Hi Louise I hope all’s well with you and the children. It’s been a long winter and I think everyone’s waiting for the spring now. Are you going to plant lots of vegetables in the garden again this year? I’m thinking about tomatoes and courgettes as they’re both easy to grow. I know I only wrote to you last week, but I just have to tell you about the school reunion I went to on Saturday. I think I told you that I got an invitation a couple of months ago. I left school twenty years ago and haven’t kept in touch with anyone from my class, so I was very surprised to get the invite. First I decided not to go, but then I thought it might be quite fun to see how everyone is and how much people have changed. So I accepted and we all met up at a new Italian restaurant in town. I was the second person to arrive and I must tell you I didn’t recognise the woman who welcomed me in! She was very attractive and slim. No wonder I didn’t know who she was because when we were at school she used to be quite fat and shy and she didn’t use to join in. So that was the first surprise and there were many more I can tell you! My best friend at school was there (see attached photo) and it was really good to see her again. I don’t know why we lost touch, but it was good to catch up with her. I hope we’ll stay in contact now. Almost everyone is married or divorced with one or more children and it’s strange to think of us all as adults now. After an hour or so of talking to everyone (and there were a lot of us there – about thirty I would say), we sat down for our meal and then of course we started talking about the old days at school and we remembered teachers we loved and hated and all the naughty things we did. I don’t know how our teachers coped with us because our class was quite bad! At the end of the meal we all exchanged email addresses and promised to keep in touch and organise another reunion for next year. Perhaps we should invite some of the teachers to join us next time! See you soon. LoveAmy xx Amy wants to grow some vegetables this year. TrueAmy’s last email to Louise was one week ago.

Sample QuestionRead the email. Are the statements true (T), false (F) or not given (NG)? Hi Kate It was good to hear from you the other day. I know you’ve been really busy with the move and getting everything sorted out in your new home. I can’t wait to come and visit! I’m so glad that you enjoyed reading The Lacuna. I thought you would, as you’ve been to Mexico and the States and probably know some of the places mentioned. Whenever I read one of Barbara Kingsolver’s novels I realise that I will never be as good a writer as she is! But I can dream, can’t I? As the new school year is almost here I’ve decided to start doing some evening courses as I don’t want to get into the habit of staying at home watching TV. I’ve signed up for a new course in creative writing at the local college. The programme looks quite interesting as we will be covering different aspects of writing like poetry, biography, fiction and screen writing. The only thing I’m not looking forward to is reading my ‘work’ to the rest of the group but I suppose everyone will be feeling nervous about that. I’ve also just discovered that someone is offering drumming lessons at the community centre down the road. I was at a friend’s house recently and they had a huge drum kit in the music room. Of course I had to have a go … you know me. I’ve always wanted to be in a rock band. Wow! It was so fantastic. Luckily they don’t have any neighbours as I’m sure I made a terrible noise but at least I thought I was good! It was such fun and then, the other day, I saw a poster advertising drumming workshops locally. You pay for a course of six lessons and I guess after that you’ll know whether you want to continue or not. I’m really excited. It’s such a good way to get rid of stress and it’s quite good exercise as well. I read that they also do team-building sessions in companies so I might suggest it to my boss as morale is pretty low at the moment and a lot of people are thinking of leaving. I think it would be great to get together and just make as much noise as possible! You could suggest it to your boss too! How about you? Have you had any more thoughts about joining that photography class you were talking about? It would be a good way to meet people and I’m sure your tutor would take you out and about so you’d get to know the local area a bit better. There’s so much you can do with digital photography these days and you’ve certainly got a great camera. If we do all the courses we want to do, we’ll have no time to see one another. Perhaps we should book a date in the diary now before we become famous artists! How about next weekend? LoveAlice xKate has just moved into a new house. _ NG_The Lacuna is a work of fiction.
