If you owe a company or an individual some money, they may resort to use debt collectors to help them collect the cash from you. The debt collectors may take the advantage of your ignorance of the law to intimidate or harass you. That’s why the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act was designed to eliminate deceptive, abusive and unfair debt collection practices. The law became effective in March 1978.

Fair Debt Collection Practices Act also encourages consistent state action to protect consumers from abuses in debt collection and also protects reputable debt collectors from unfair competition. One of the interesting provisions of this act is that, the debt collector cannot communicate with the person in debt at any unusual time, i.e. before 8.00 a.m. and after 9.00 p.m. can you state some the unfair practices prohibited by this act?
