Tiene dos formas de escribirse. La primera forma es el verso, se caracteriza por estar organizado en líneas o renglones y cada renglón por una cantidad determinada de sílabas que tienen una musicalidad especial.Cada renglón o línea del poema se denomina también verso; cuando se tiene un conjunto de versos, no importando su cantidad, se denomina estrofa.Para darle la musicalidad al poema versado se usa la coincidencia de sonidos más una repetición de vocales y/o consonantes al final de cada verso, no importando si los versos son seguidos o no; este recurso literario se denomina rima. Los tipos de rimas más usuales son: la rima consonante, que sucede cuando se repiten todos los sonidos a partir de la última vocal acentuada de la palabra final de los versos rimados.La rima asonante se presenta cuando solamente coinciden los sonidos de vocales a partir de la última vocal acentuada de la palabra final de los versos rimados.La otra manera es la prosa poética o simplemente prosa, ésta en general no tiene ninguna forma determinada de escribirse, es decir, no está sometida a una cantidad de silabas y la musicalidad es relativa, o no la tiene. Permite contar las cosas de manera directa; los temas que se tratan en la prosa poética van desde lo romántico, la historia, la existencia del ser humano, entre otros.Cuando un poema está organizado en renglones, con cantidad de silabas determinadas y tiene musicalidad, podemos decir que está escrito en :
