A group calling themselves the Separatist wanted to leave The Puritans wanted to remain Anglican in England by reforming the Church. The King rejected these reform attempts and persecuted the Puritans. Led by John Winthrop the Puritans formed the New England Company. With a Royal Charter they set sail for the Americas in their quest for religious freedom. Ironically, the puritans did not tolerate other views other than their own.
