The original title was the mask of red death: a fantasy. It was published in 1842. The story follows the attempts of a prince to avoid a dangerous plague which is called the red death. He avoids the plague by hiding in his Abby. Then he and many of the other wealthy noblemen host a masquerade in seven rooms of the Abby, each of which is decorated with a different color.

But a mysterious figure that is actually disguised as red death enters into each room. The prince dies after he confronts the stranger whose cost has nothing inside of it. This story is a Gothic fiction one which focuses on the inevitability of death. It has since been adopted into multiple forms including the film in 1964.
