Sample QuestionRead the passage below and then answer the questions. In May, 2003, a Norwegian government panel, the Scientific Committee for Inspection of Industry, ruled that whale blubber from Norway's hunt contains such high levels of toxins that it cannot be used for human consumption. A health advisory for whale meat was issued, based on its mercury content, advising pregnant or breastfeeding women not to eat it. the effects of toxic compounds in whales on humans can easily b e overcome by not eating whale products. But what about the effects of these compounds on the whales themselves? One very damaging toxin is a synthetic compound, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB). It migrates into the fat and so works its way up the food web. The concentrations of this chemical in the blubber of whales can be millions of times higher than in the surrounding seawater. The concentrations of PCBs in the bodies of some beluga whales, found dead in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, were so high that their bodies would be classified as toxic waste in Canada, where they were found. Among other effects, PCBs damage learning ability and reproductive success and weaken the immune system. When a female whale is nursing, mild is produced from her blubber and the newborn calf's food is contaminated with these deadly toxins. In times of food stress, when whales rely on their blubber reserves, PCBs flow out of the blubber and into general circulation within the body. Q1. The dead Beluga whale was found in Canada?
