Admiral Aokiji, also known as Kuzan, was the first marine admiral to be formally introduced in the One Piece series. Shanks acquired his distinctive scar from Marshall D. Teach, also known as Blackbeard. This encounter occurred before Teach became a notorious pirate and formed the Blackbeard Pirates. During their time on Whitebeard's crew, Teach used a claw weapon to give Shanks the scar. Daz Bones, also known as Mr. 1, was a member of Baroque Works, a criminal organization in the One Piece world. During the Alabasta arc, Zoro faced off against Daz Bones, who had the power of the Dice-Dice Fruit, allowing him to turn his body into steel. After a challenging battle, Zoro managed to defeat Daz Bones by developing a new technique to cut steel. Following the fight, Daz Bones, impressed by Zoro's strength and determination, suggested that Zoro should try cutting diamonds next, acknowledging his potential to become even stronger.

Zoro was the first recruit of the Straw Hat crew. Luffy found him captured by the Marines and tied to a post, where he was being punished for standing up to the corrupt Marine Captain Morgan. Recognizing Zoro's strength and potential, Luffy asked him to join his crew. Zoro agreed after Luffy helped him escape, marking the beginning of the Straw Hat Pirates.
