A+ Study Guide: Installing IDE & SCSI Devices

RAID 0 (Stripping)

The feature of RAID 0 system is that data are split up into chunks that is written across all the drives in the array. With the simultaneous usage of multiple disks (the minimum number being 2), RAID 0 delivers finer I/O performance which can be further enhanced by the use of multiple controllers, preferably one controller per disk.

Benefits

  • RAIDS 0 provides good performance in case of read as well as write operations. Parity control does not add on to overheads.

  • Since the entire storage capacity can be used, no disk overhead incurred.

  • The technology is easy to put into practice.

Shortcomings

RAID 0 cannot tolerate faults i.e., it is non fault-tolerant. All data in the RAID 0 array is lost in case a disk fails. It is advisable not to use this on mission-critical systems.
