  • External commands  A MS-DOS command that is not included in command.com. They are commonly external either because it requires large requirements or are not commonly used commands.
  • Lmhosts  A text file used to locate remote computers for network file, printer, and remote access services. Used if WINS or DNS servers are not available on the network. It essentially maps NetBIOS names (commonly used for computer names) to IP addresses for hosts that are not located on the local subnet. In Windows XP, the file is stored in the systemroot\System32\Drivers\Etc folder.

It is IMPORANT to note that while WINS and DNS resolve name to IP address and vice versa dynamically, whereas Lmhosts & hosts file are static files i.e., the records for name to IP address and vice versa are manually created in this file.

  • Protocol  A Protocol is the set of rules that computers have to follow in order to communicate with other computers or systems in the network.
