When Tony told Durante that Juila was gone to his friend's house, we figured out that there would be distance seen between their friendship.
When we saw Durante riding to Tony's house at the beginning of the story, we received hints that he would be riding towards his destination later in the story.
When we saw birds circling one body, we knew that they might be circling another body.
When Tony described his father's death, it was a hint that there may be another death later in the story and it became obvious later on that indeed it was foreshadowing for that's exactly what occurred.

The creatiion of giving hints about what is going to happen before it does is critical to our understanding of the story because then we are more able to predict what might occur in the story.
The importance of being able to recognize the way the author sees something in light of the way the reader can relate to the same thing is usually helpful to me as a reader.
The use of the author's words create a picture in the reader's mind in a way that helps the reader to visualize (see) the story better and thus get an idea of what the author is talking about in a real sort of way.
