The respiratory system consists of the larynx, trachea, bronchi, pharynx, and diaphragm. The larynx, also known as the voice box, is responsible for producing sound and protecting the airway. The trachea, or windpipe, connects the larynx to the bronchi and allows air to pass in and out of the lungs. The bronchi are the main passageways that lead into the lungs. The pharynx, or throat, serves as a common pathway for both air and food. Lastly, the diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity and plays a crucial role in breathing by contracting and relaxing to allow for inhalation and exhalation.
