Connective tissue is mostly matrix because it is composed of a large amount of extracellular matrix, which is a non-living substance that surrounds and supports the cells. This matrix consists of fibers, such as collagen and elastin, embedded in a ground substance that can be solid, gel-like, or fluid. Connective tissue provides structural support, connects and protects organs, and helps with tissue repair. Examples of connective tissue include bone, cartilage, blood, and adipose tissue.
