Teaching as Vocation, Mission, and Profession

The term 'vocation' is derived from the Latin 'vocare,' which translates to 'to call.' This etymology reflects the idea that a vocation is not just a job or profession, but a calling or purpose that aligns with one's passions and skills. It suggests a deeper connection to one's work, indicating that a vocation is often seen as a path one is meant to follow, guided by personal values and aspirations. This concept emphasizes the significance of finding fulfillment and meaning in one's professional life.

According to Thomas Merton, finding one's vocation transcends mere financial considerations and involves a deeper, more meaningful engagement with life. When individuals shift their focus from merely making a living to truly living, they embrace their passions, values, and purpose. This shift signifies a commitment to authenticity and fulfillment, allowing them to align their actions with their inner calling. Presidential Decree 1006 was enacted to establish teaching as a formal profession in the Philippines, emphasizing the importance of education and the role of educators in nation-building. Signed on September 22, 1976, this decree aimed to enhance the quality of education by regulating the teaching profession, setting standards for educators, and ensuring their professional development. This recognition helped elevate the status of teachers, ensuring that they received the respect and support necessary to fulfill their vital role in society.

RA 9293 introduced the Special or Temporary Permit to address the need for qualified educators in specific situations, allowing individuals who did not fully meet the requirements for a professional teaching license to teach under certain conditions.
