3. If you were searching for information on the ethics of cloning humans, which would be the better keyword search:

Explanation

Keyword searching should use only the terms that reflect the most important concepts you are trying to find information about. The more terms you enter, the more narrow your search will be. Words like "involved" and "what" will make your search too restrictive, even in a google search. Also, many databases do not support natural language searching.

4. A search engine (e.g. Google, Bing) will return results from:

Explanation

No. There is no "about us" or FAQ. This is a "red flag" that should make you begin to look for other ways (e.g., peeling back the URL/web address to find out if you can find more information about the site and its creator, using google to look for other sites that link to the one you're looking at, googling the name of the site's creator, if known.).

Submit
6. A web site that allows visitors to make changes, contributions, or corrections is called a:

Explanation

Wikis use software that allows for easy collaboration and modification. The most famous and biggest wiki is Wikipedia. (Definition from Merriam-Webster.com)

7. Do you think this a reliable, trustworthy site?

Explanation

No. There are several problems with this site. Here are three key ones:

1)The lack of FAQ/about us explaining who the author(s) or purpose of the site should be a concern for anyone doing research.

2) While the site was created at University of Michigan, which is a well-regarded school of higher learning, it is not clearly attributed to a specific scholar, researcher or department, which is highly unusual. When you combine this with the absence of any publication date or other publication information, it should make one question whether the page was created by a reputable authority.

3) Additionally, when you see a tilde ~ in a web address, this is often an indicator that the the page you're looking at is a personal page. You should always do more in depth investigation when you see a ~ in a web address.

Submit
8. Is there a publication date or copyright date on the site?

Explanation

No. There is a note on the on the page "supplementi" that states "All links valid as of November 30, 2000", but there is no copyright date or listed publisher.

While there are some high quality sites that do not list copyright or publication dates when you see this in combination with other "red flags", such as the lack of FAQ/authorship information, it may be the sign that the site is not created by a reputable source.

The librarians will teach you our expert tricks for evaluating websites while you are at GBS.
