Built to Last: The Plant Cell Wall Function

If a tree needs to stand tall against gravity and wind without a skeleton, then it needs a rigid outer layer for its cells. If the cell wall provides this stiffness, then the main plant cell wall function is providing structural support.

If an animal needs to move its limbs and be flexible, then its cells cannot be encased in a rigid box. If only plants require this external rigidity for their "skeleton," then the statement that animals have them is false.
