Because of the financial crisis in France, the King called together the meeting of representatives. It is composed of 3 estates- 1st estate is the clergy, 2nd estate is the nobility, 3rd estate is the commoners. The Meeting of the Estates General hadn't been called in 175 years.

Extremely violent stage of the Revolution. The guillotine was used to execute people. Fear and paranoia dominated this stage.

Aristotle is not associated with Natural Rights. John Locke is credited with the philosophy. Natural rights are given by god and cannot be taken away. John Locke stated these rights were life, liberty and the pursuit of property. Thomas Jefferson borrowed these beliefs for the Declaration of Independence when he wrote that we are all entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

During the Glorious Revolution the William and Mary had to agree to implement the English Bill of Rights. The English Bill of Right put limits on the King of England and instituted democratic reforms

The 3rd Estate was ignored at the Meeting of the Estates General. Members of the 3rd Estate wanted their voice heard. The decided to form a group known as the National Assembly. They felt they were the true representatives of France. The National Assembly, representing the commoners of France, created the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen.

I remember this because Britain is separated from continental Europe. Trading between countries that were part of the continent of Europe is okay, but Britain is not okay. This was an attempt to isolate and punish Britain.
