Controlled Substances Trivia Quiz!

The Medical Center policy for controlled substances is based on federal law, DEA, and VA regulations (VHA Handbook 1108.01, Controlled Substances).

Only pharmacists will be expected to adhere to the provisions in this policy.

Any identified discrepancy in inventory will be reported immediately to the Nurse Manager, Chief of Pharmacy, and the Controlled Substance Coordinator for follow-up and resolution.

When it is necessary to "waste" part of a controlled substance from an inpatient ward an entry in Omnicell documenting the usage will include the amount given.

A witness is required for all waste activities.

Removal and disposal of transdermal narcotics must be done in the presence of another nurse (two RNs or an RN and an LPN).

Documentation of wastage of narcotics in a PCA syringe or an epidural bag must also be documented on the PCA Flow Sheet or the Epidural Flow Sheet.

Any suspected theft, diversion, or suspicious loss of drugs will be immediately reported to the CSC, VHA medical center Police Service, and the Medical Center Director for investigation.
