Fire Guard F-60 For Construction & Torch Operations Exam Prep Test

Paper, wood shavings, straw, and fabric are all examples of combustible materials because they have the ability to burn and catch fire easily. These materials contain organic compounds that can undergo combustion when exposed to heat or a flame. They have low ignition temperatures and can sustain a fire once ignited. Therefore, they are considered combustible and should be handled with caution to prevent fire hazards.

Hot work inspections are conducted to ensure that the area where torch operations were performed is safe and free from any potential fire hazards. Conducting the inspection 30 minutes after completion of torch operations allows enough time for any smoldering or hidden fires to become apparent. This waiting period ensures that the inspection is thorough and accurate, minimizing the risk of missing any potential hazards. Therefore, the statement that all hot work inspections must be conducted 30 minutes after completion of torch operations is true.

The pre-hot check reports must be maintained on premises for a minimum of 48 hours after work is done. This is important because these reports provide information about the condition of the equipment before it was used, ensuring that any issues or damages that may have occurred during the work can be identified and addressed. By keeping the reports for 48 hours, there is enough time to review them and take any necessary actions or follow-up measures.

To be a fire guard in New York City, one must obtain a Certificate of Fitness (C or F) from the Fire Department of New York (FDNY). This certification ensures that the individual is trained and qualified to perform fire safety duties.

A hot work area must be kept at least 35 feet away from any combustible material to ensure safety. This distance helps to prevent the risk of fire or explosion due to sparks or heat generated during hot work activities. Keeping a safe distance reduces the likelihood of ignition and allows for better control of potential hazards.

Compressed gas containers must be replaced when empty because they can no longer be used to store or transport gas. Additionally, they should not be rolled on their side or rim because it can cause damage to the container, potentially leading to leaks or other safety hazards. Therefore, the statement "Compressed gas containers must be replaced when empty and cannot be rolled on its side or rim" is true.

The statement implies that for every tool that produces sparks, a fire guard is necessary. This suggests that fire guards are used as a safety measure to prevent any potential fires caused by sparks. Therefore, the correct answer is true, as it aligns with the requirement of having one fire guard per spark producing tool.

A Fire Guard is required one floor level below the work area with a B:C rating fire extinguisher. This means that it is necessary to have a fire guard stationed on the floor directly below the work area, and this fire guard should have a fire extinguisher with a B:C rating. The B:C rating indicates that the fire extinguisher is suitable for use on both flammable liquid fires (Class B) and electrical fires (Class C). Therefore, it is important to have this fire guard and fire extinguisher in place to ensure safety in case of a fire emergency.

Permits do have to be readily available for inspection by the Fire Department. This means that when the Fire Department requests to see a permit, it should be easily accessible and provided for inspection. Failure to have permits readily available can result in penalties or fines.

The owner of the premises of the hot work operation must be notified in writing 48 hours before work begins. This is important to ensure that the owner has enough time to take any necessary precautions or preparations for the hot work operation. It allows them to assess the potential risks, make arrangements for fire safety measures, and ensure that the work can be carried out safely without causing any damage to the premises or surrounding areas.

After completing work involving hot works, the hot works authorization must be available for inspection 48 hours later. This allows sufficient time for any potential hazards or risks associated with the hot works to be identified and addressed before the area is deemed safe for inspection.

Fire extinguishers are not allowed to be put on the floor because they need to be easily accessible in case of an emergency. Placing them on the floor can obstruct their visibility and make them harder to reach. Fire extinguishers should be mounted on walls at a height that is easily visible and accessible to everyone in the area. This ensures that they can be quickly located and used effectively to extinguish a fire.

A B:C rating fire extinguisher must be readily available within 30 feet of a hot work location. This is because B:C rated fire extinguishers are specifically designed to extinguish fires involving flammable liquids and electrical equipment. Hot work locations, such as areas where welding or cutting is being performed, pose a higher risk of fire due to the presence of sparks, heat, and potential fuel sources. Therefore, having a fire extinguisher within close proximity ensures that any fire can be quickly and effectively suppressed before it spreads and causes further damage.

Automatic sprinkler protection should never be turned off while hot work is being performed. Hot work, such as welding or cutting, poses a fire hazard and the automatic sprinkler system is an essential safety measure to quickly suppress any fire that may occur. Turning off the sprinkler system during hot work increases the risk of a fire spreading and causing extensive damage. Therefore, the correct answer is False.

It is not safe to attempt to extinguish a flame when the gas supply is on because the flame can be fueled by the gas, leading to a potential explosion or fire hazard. Therefore, it is advisable to first turn off the gas supply before attempting to extinguish the flame.

The pre hot work check must be conducted once per day. This ensures that all necessary safety precautions are taken before starting any hot work activities. Conducting the check only once per day helps to maintain consistency and efficiency in the workflow, while also ensuring that potential hazards are identified and addressed before they pose a risk. Conducting the check more than once per day may be excessive and time-consuming, while not conducting it at all increases the chances of accidents and incidents occurring.

The correct answer is False. This is because directing a chemical stream at the center of the flame can disrupt the flame's stability and cause it to go out. It is important to direct the chemical stream at the base of the flame or in a sweeping motion across the base to effectively extinguish the fire.
