First Aid Annual Review - Quiz

Questions and Answers
  • 1.

Welcome to the first aid annual review course.  All of you have had first-aid one or more times as a condition of employment with Dungarvin.  This course will be best used to remind you of all the things you already know to help those in your care in an emergency situation. Note: This is not an American Red Cross certified course, just a Dungarvin based review to meet our conditions of employment. There are several reasons or barriers that people won't act in an emergency.  They include:
    • Being afraid of doing something wrong
    • Not being sure of what the emergency is
    • Figuring that someone else will take action
    • Concern one may get a disease
    • Not being sure of when to call 911/EMS
    • Worry that one might be sued.
In regards to being sued one must remember the rules of THE GOOD SAMARITAN LAW.
    • You must ask permission.
    • Move a person only if they are in danger of being hurt.
    • Always call 911
    • Continue to give care until someone else arrives to assist or take over.
    • If a person says they don't want care, you DO NOT GIVE CARE but still call 911
    • If a person goes unconscious, even if they have previously denied care when conscious, you may give care as it is presumed you would.
There are only four reasons one would stop giving care in any emergent situation.
    • Someone starts breathing or some other sign notates they are ok.
    • Another person takes over for you.
    • You can't continue because you’re exhausted.
    • The environment becomes unsafe for you, them or both of you.
The American Red Cross reminds you to Check/Call/Care
    • Check the scene to be sure it is safe
    • Call the EMS system (911)
    • Care for the individual.
Remember to ask yourself the following questions when you find someone in need of care.
    • Is there danger?
    • What happened?
    • What is wrong?
    • Can anyone else help?
When you check a conscious person ask them
    • What Happened?
    • What is their pain or discomfort?
    • Do they have any allergies?
    • Any medical conditions or medications?
Be sure to check them from head to toe.

  • 2.

If someone is choking please follow these steps:
    • Ask if you can assist.
    • If they agree, go behind them with your arm covering the front of the body so they don't fall.
    • Keep your legs slightly bent to assure balance.
    • Do 5 back blows between their shoulder blades with your palm.
    • If that doesn't stop the choking do abdominal thrusts.
    • Stand behind them, locate the navel with two fingers, ball into a fist, grab the fist with your other hand and do upward thrusts to the abdomen.

The most serious burns, which can destroy skin and even underlying tissue, are:

    • A.

      First-degree burns

    • B.

      Second-degree burns

    • C.

      Third-degree burns

    Correct Answer
    C. Third-degree burns
    Explanation
Third-degree burns are the most serious burns because they can destroy both the skin and underlying tissue. Unlike first-degree and second-degree burns, which only affect the outer layers of the skin, third-degree burns penetrate through all layers of the skin and can cause extensive damage. These burns are often painless because they destroy nerve endings. Treatment for third-degree burns usually involves skin grafts and long-term medical care to promote healing and prevent infection.

First-aid treatment for chemical burns usually involves:

    • A.

      Applying petroleum jelly

    • B.

Flushing the affected skin or eyes with water for 15 minutes

    • C.

Elevating the burned body part for an hour

    Correct Answer
    B. Flushing the affected skin or eyes with water for 15 minutes
    Explanation
Chemical burns occur when the skin or eyes come into contact with harmful chemicals. Flushing the affected area with water for 15 minutes is the correct first-aid treatment for chemical burns. This helps to remove any remaining chemicals from the skin or eyes and dilute the concentration of the chemical. Flushing with water should be done immediately after the burn occurs and should continue for a full 15 minutes to ensure thorough rinsing. This treatment helps to minimize the damage caused by the chemical and can provide relief from pain and discomfort. Applying petroleum jelly or elevating the burned body part is not the recommended first-aid treatment for chemical burns.

    • D.

Which comes first when someone is choking after you have recieved consent?

    • A.

      Abdominal Thrusts

    • B.

      Back Blows

    • C.

      Hip Toss

    Correct Answer
    B. Back Blows
    Explanation
After receiving consent, the first step when someone is choking is to perform back blows. Back blows are a technique used to dislodge an obstruction from the airway by striking the person's back between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand. This can help to force the object out and restore normal breathing. Abdominal thrusts and hip toss are not the initial steps for choking and should be performed if back blows are unsuccessful in clearing the airway.
