What Kind Of Soprano Are You? - Quiz

This quiz is designed to determine (by simple personality traits and preferences) what soprano voice is most akin to your personality. A basic understanding of singing is recommended.

You May Get

Coloratura Soprano

Whether lyric or dramatic, the coloratura is the highest-voiced among all classical subtypes, capable of reaching - or even extending beyond - F6 (two octaves above middle C), the highest note demanded of any singer in the classical repertoire. Coloraturas specialize in highly ornamented, fast-paced passages and stunning leaps, often exceeding an octave in interval. Unfortunately, the esteem associated with the coloratura voice is not without its drawbacks; coloraturas are notorious divas, and are often called ditzes or airheads. Fear not; in all likelihood, these comments are the produced of lower-voiced women who are simply jealous of your talent! After all, not everyone can sing "Der Holle Rache!" On a personal level, coloraturas are like their voices: beautiful and full of high energy, often seemingly flighty or inconsistent. Really, you're just a social butterfly! You can't help it if you're too charming for words! Coloraturas rarely get on well with other sopranos, though they tend to be quite popular with the tenors. Go figure. Coloraturas are expected to be able to not only reach into the stratosphere, but to stay there, supporting incredibly demanding tessituras with ease that would make a tenore leggerio simply green with envy! If you're capable of reaching these high notes but lack the agility or ease associated with the coloratura voice, you may be more comfortable as a spinto or a lyric soprano, but if you're lucky enough to be blessed with a true coloratura voice, be sure to mind it and take care.

Soubrette

Next to coloraturas, soubrettes are probably the least popular of all sopranos. But it's not your fault! The term "soubrette" not only refers to a specific type of soprano (or even high mezzo-soprano) voice, but also to a specific role; usually a coy, gossipy chambermaid, who is always flirtatious and even downright aggressive, leading to the popular misconception that soubrettes are notoriously promiscuous. Your plight is akin to that of the coloratura you may someday become, simply because most of these rumors are inspired by envy. Soubrettes boast an absolutely beautiful, bright tone with a lighter vocal weight than that of most sopranos. So, while it may be difficult for them to be heard over an eighty-piece orchestra, soubrettes possess some of the most beautiful tone and coloring of all the classical voices. A soubrette's vocal range is decidedly smaller than that of other sopranos, extending only up to "high D" (D6), a note that any soprano worth her jewelry should be able to claim, though a soubrette is almost never required to stay in this range, and is usually possessed of a tessitura among the lowest of all sopranos, akin to the speiltenor (or "character" tenor) among male voices. The trick is doing so with a freed and light quality. Many women grow out of soubrette repertoire, their voices evolving into one of the more established subtypes; a lyric soprano or lyric-coloratura, most often. Other sopranos may not like you, but see if you can find a friend among the more experienced coloraturas; they should be sympathetic to your plight. And, if that doesn't pan out, don't worry - the men will still adore you!
