Conflict minerals are frequently found in electronic products such as cell phones, portable  music players, digital cameras and computers. Conflict minerals are sourced from rebel  controlled mines located in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). 

 The profits from the sale of conflict minerals are financing armed conflict and human rights  violations.

The USA is the first country to enact conflict minerals legislation. The legislation was part of the Dodd Frank Wall Street Reform & Consumer Protection Act.  the Dodd Frank Wall Street Reform & Consumer Protection Act.  

This Act requires companies subject to SEC annual reporting to investigate and disclose in their annual disclosure reports whether any conflict minerals procured were sourced from  rebel controlled mines in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).  

The SEC expects to issue their final conflict mineral reporting rules in late 2011. 

The European Union has not yet enacted conflict minerals disclosure rules.
