Unit 2: Early American Colonies Study Quiz

Jamestown was founded in 1607. Although Roanoke was first, it can not be considered successful because everyone disappeared:)

The pilgrims refused to leave their ship when it landed at the New World until they agreed to a set of laws. These laws are the Mayflower Compact.

The south is well associated with farming. The climate here lends itself to growing cash crops. Tobacco was our first cash crop. Later cotton will become king. However, the Middle Colonies also has a strong farming economy. They are known as the Bread basket because they grow wheat, oats, etc. Think Quaker oatmeal (you should know Quakers founded Pennsylvania- a middle colony). New England does not have the right conditions for farming. SO they develop a strong shipping/timber industry and soon become know internationally for their trade.

To establish a colony in the new world, two things are required: a charter and money. A charter is a legal document that grants permission from the ruling authority to establish a colony. It outlines the rights and responsibilities of the colonizers. Money is necessary to fund the expedition, purchase supplies, and support the initial settlement. Without a charter, the colony would not have legal recognition, and without money, it would be impossible to sustain the necessary resources for survival and growth.

House of Burgesses were elected representatives in the early Jamestown colony. Our Congress and house of representatives are modeled off of this.

The Plymouth Colony was founded by a group of English settlers known as the Pilgrims. They were led by William Bradford and other leaders who sought religious freedom and separation from the Church of England. The Pilgrims arrived in North America aboard the Mayflower in 1620 and established the Plymouth Colony in what is now Massachusetts. William Bradford later became the long-time governor of the colony and played a key role in its development.

During the 1600s, the Church of England was the official state church in England. Therefore, people living in England during this time were required to be members of the Church of England. The Anglican Church is another name for the Church of England, so both options are correct.

Sir Walter Raliegh recieved the first charter from the Queen to establish a colony. He never visits, but this does establish the Roanoke colony.
