The Resistance to Flow: Viscosity Quiz

Viscosity describes how much internal friction exists within a liquid. A fluid with high viscosity is thick and moves slowly because its particles have a hard time sliding past one another. Conversely, a low-viscosity fluid like water flows quickly and easily. This property is a result of the unique ways that molecules interact and stick together within a substance.

Water molecules are small and do not attract each other as strongly as the molecules in honey do. This allows water to flow with very little internal resistance. Honey contains long, complex molecules that get tangled and cling to each other, creating high viscosity. This thickness slows down the pouring process, demonstrating how molecular structure affects physical behavior.

Just as friction between two solid surfaces slows down a sliding box, internal friction within a liquid slows down its flow. When one layer of fluid tries to move over another layer, the molecules exert a pull on each other. This resistance is exactly what we measure as viscosity. It determines how much energy is needed to move a liquid through a pipe.

Engine oil must be thick enough to stay on the metal parts and provide a protective layer, but thin enough to flow through the engine when it is cold. If the viscosity is too high, the oil won't move fast enough to protect the engine during startup. If it is too low, the oil will be too thin to prevent the metal parts from rubbing together.

Viscosity is a key factor in any situation involving fluid movement. In a lava lamp, the wax must have the right viscosity to form slow-moving bubbles. Geologists study the viscosity of lava to predict how fast it will travel during an eruption. Engineers designing paint must ensure it is thick enough to stay on a brush but thin enough to spread smoothly.

The word "viscous" is used by scientists to describe materials that resist flowing. This includes everyday items like peanut butter, glue, and heavy grease. When you describe a fluid as viscous, you are pointing out that its internal particles are strongly attracted to each other, preventing them from moving freely or quickly when a force, like gravity, is applied.

A viscometer is a specialized instrument designed to measure the resistance of a fluid to deformation. One common type works by measuring how long it takes for a ball to fall through a liquid or how much force is needed to turn a rotor inside the fluid. These measurements give scientists a precise number to describe the thickness of the substance.

Molasses is a very thick, slow-moving liquid. At room temperature, its particles are held together by strong intermolecular forces, creating significant internal friction. Compared to alcohol or juice, which splash and flow almost instantly, molasses takes a long time to change shape or pour out of a container. This makes it a classic example of a high-viscosity substance.

The "thickness" of a fluid is not permanent. Changing the temperature adds or removes energy, which alters flow. Changing the chemical composition, such as adding sugar to water, increases the number of particles that can bump into each other. Extreme pressure can also force molecules closer together, making it harder for them to move, which increases the resistance to flow.

Larger or more complex molecules, like those found in heavy oils or polymers, tend to get "tangled" up with one another as they try to move. This entanglement creates more internal friction than what is found in simple, small molecules like those in water. Therefore, substances with large, bulky molecules typically exhibit a much higher viscosity and slower flow rate.

Although glaciers appear to be solid ice, the immense pressure from the layers above causes the ice to deform and flow like a liquid over hundreds of years. Because the flow is so incredibly slow, the viscosity of a glacier is considered to be billions of times higher than that of water. This allows scientists to use fluid dynamics to study how ice sheets move.

The syrup has much higher internal friction, or viscosity, than the water. As the syrup tries to move, its molecules pull on each other and stick to the surface of the board more effectively. The water molecules have less attraction to each other and the board, allowing them to tumble and slide down the incline with much greater speed and less resistance.

When a liquid is heated, the particles gain kinetic energy and move more rapidly. This extra energy allows the molecules to overcome the attractive forces holding them together. As a result, the particles slide past each other more easily, causing the viscosity to drop. This is why cold maple syrup is hard to pour but flows quickly once it is warmed up.

While it is a common mistake to confuse the two, density and viscosity are different properties. Density is about how much mass is in a space, while viscosity is about resistance to flow. For example, some oils are much more viscous than water (they flow slower), but they are actually less dense than water (they float on top of it).

Unlike liquids, the viscosity of a gas actually increases when heated. In a gas, the particles are already spread out. Heating them makes them move faster and collide more frequently. These constant collisions create more resistance for the gas as it tries to flow in one direction. This is a unique way that the kinetic molecular theory applies differently to gases than liquids.
