Disasters can be classified based on their origin into two main types: natural and human-made. Understanding this classification helps in disaster preparedness and response strategies, as the causes and mitigation approaches differ significantly between the two types.

Nuclear war is classified as a human-induced disaster because it results from deliberate actions taken by individuals or nations, specifically the decision to use nuclear weapons. Unlike natural disasters such as earthquakes, cyclones, or floods, which occur due to natural processes, a nuclear war is a consequence of human conflict, political decisions, and military strategies. The devastating effects of nuclear war can lead to widespread destruction, loss of life, and long-term environmental damage, highlighting the significant impact of human choices on disaster scenarios.

Floods in coastal areas are primarily influenced by various natural phenomena such as heavy rainfall, which can lead to overflow from rivers and drainage systems. Additionally, storm surges from cyclones and tsunamis can inundate low-lying regions, exacerbating flood conditions. Glacial melting due to climate change also contributes to rising sea levels, increasing the risk of flooding in these vulnerable coastal zones. Therefore, the interplay of these factors makes coastal areas particularly susceptible to flooding.

Floods can saturate the soil in mountainous regions, reducing its stability. When heavy rainfall causes water to accumulate rapidly, it can erode the ground and weaken the underlying rock and soil structures. Drought is classified as a 'Slow Onset' disaster because it develops gradually over an extended period, often taking months or even years to manifest its full impact. Unlike sudden disasters like earthquakes or flash floods, which occur rapidly and without warning, droughts result from prolonged periods of insufficient rainfall, leading to water shortages, crop failures, and economic stress. This slow progression allows for the accumulation of adverse effects, making it distinct from other types of disasters that strike suddenly.

Risk reduction measures for floods focus on preparedness and response strategies. Mapping flood-prone areas helps identify regions at risk, enabling better planning and resource allocation. Evacuating livestock and people from vulnerable areas minimizes loss of life and property during a flood event. Issuing warnings through mass media ensures that communities receive timely information, allowing them to take necessary precautions. In contrast, building houses without stilts in coastal areas increases vulnerability to flooding, making it a poor risk reduction measure.

In coastal regions, agricultural land is often affected by tidal flooding, which brings in seawater. This saline water infiltrates the soil, increasing its salinity levels. High salinity can hinder plant growth, as most crops are not tolerant to saline conditions. Over time, the accumulation of salt in the soil can lead to reduced fertility and productivity, rendering the land unfit for conventional agriculture. Thus, tidal flooding significantly impacts the agricultural viability of coastal lands, making them unproductive.
