English Colonies Roanoke and Jamestown

Many English commoners were motivated to sail to colonial America in search of land and economic opportunities that were scarce in England. This quest for a fresh start allowed them to escape poverty and seek a better future for themselves and their families.

John White led the second expedition to Roanoke Island in 1587 and was appointed governor of the colony. He returned to England for supplies but faced delays due to the Anglo-Spanish War. When he finally returned to Roanoke in 1590, he found the settlement abandoned, with no trace of the colonists, except for the word "Croatoan" carved on a post. This mystery has fueled speculation about the fate of the settlers, making White's expedition a significant event in early American history.

Jamestown, founded in April 1607, was the first successful English settlement in North America, marking a significant moment in colonial history. Established by the Virginia Company, it aimed to capitalize on the resources of the New World.
