When we look at something, light from the object enters our eyes. The light makes an image, or picture, of the object on the retina of the eye. The retina takes in the light and turns it into signals. These signals travel to the brain. The brain then tells us what we see and what colours we see.
The ability to see colour comes from special visual cells, called cones, at the back of the eye.
There are two kinds of dyes. Synthetic dyes are made from artificial chemicals. Natural dyes come from plants. For example, a bright yellow dye comes from the crocus plant. Other natural dyes are made from animals.
Usually, people see a primary rainbow, or main rainbow. It is red on top of the curve and violet on the inside, with other colours in between. Sometimes a second, fainter rainbow appears higher up. This rainbow is violet on top and red on the inside.
A person with normal colour vision has three types of cones. Each type senses a different colour of light. One type responds most strongly to the colour blue. Another type reacts chiefly to green. The third type is most sensitive to red. Colour-blind people do not have one, two, or all of these types of cones.
