At the beginning of the book Jack see's himself as a worthless farm boy, but as the story goes on and he is trained by the Bard he begins to like himself more. Summary of the book The Sea Of Trolls by Nancy Farmer     The book Sea of Trolls is about and average farm boy who through the book becomes stronger. Jack, the main character of the Sea of Trolls, is not strong like the Blacksmith's Son, but he is able to become a bard, a magician who commutes with nature to summon winds and create mist. He becomes the apprentice of the Bard, a master referred to as DragonTongue, and begins his training. After a few months news comes of a raid of the Holy Isle by Berserkers, humans who when eating a special herb become wolf headed abominations. A few days later they attack his village. He is captured along with his sister Lucy, a small girl no older than six, and they voyage onto the seas. Then they are bargained for along with their fellow captives at the slave markets, but they alone are not sold. Olaf One-Brow, the Berserker’s leader, has a special plan for them. They are to be given to the half-troll shape shifter Queen Frith, but when she loses her hair at his little sister's insult she takes Lucy hostage and promises to kill her if her hair is not returned before a week is gone. Hearing this, he and the crew of Berserkers venture to the land of trolls hoping to find answers. They return just in time with the knowledge they need to return Queen Frith her hair and the adventure ends there hinting at a second book in the series. This book is about the journey from being just a farm boy to being a Bard, and the adventure that follows.

  • 3.

Write a paragraph about Thorgil's change throughout the book.  At the beginning of the book Thorgil is mean to Lucy and just cruel in general. She does have a good reason to though. She was desserted by her father and sent to live in the forest where she was raised by the king's dogs. At the end when she drinks the water from the magic well she becomes more calm, and does not want to kill herself in battle anymore. She is the second main charecter and her transition is very important in the book.

  • 4.

Write a paragraph about the Norns and thier policy. The Norns are like time themselves and the chess game they play at the troll queen's castle is a game of people lives. The Norns are birth, ageing, and death, and all that are in between. Nancy Farmer uses them as such in her writing. In The Sea of Trolls they are the most powerful charecters. Even the Norsemen are afraid of the Norns.

  • 5.

Write a paragraph about the two sides of Olaf One-Brow Olaf One-Brow is two people. He's a kind ruler of a ship and a civil warrior. When he eats these special herbs hebecomes someone else, a wolf-headed demon who kills and kills and shows no mercy even for a tiny helpless baby. In a diffrent place he could become a hero. Instead he kills millions and thinks it right.

  • 6.

Write a short paragraph about the troll queen. The troll queen defys all stereotypes about the trolls. She is kind yet powerful, and does not kill on sight as Jack is told. She has more of a grandmotherly nature, and asks them to refer to her  mother. She rules with a gentle, but stern grip on the troll world.

  • 7.

Explain the Bard and Jack's relationship. The Bard seems to be quite stern and also very wise. Jack seems to look up to him as a mentor. The Bard also shows that he cares about Jack. The amulet of protection is the Bard's greatest treasure, and I don't think he would give it away on a whim. Jack also shows he cares by feeding the Bard when he is driven insane by the Nightmare.

  • 8.

Does Olaf deserve to die? Olaf does plenty of horrible things in his life. He raids villages and kills innocent people. Yet he is very protective of Jack and his sister Lucy once her finds out he is a bard, and that she could be a gift to the queen. When the bear-troll attacks him he rushes into battle and brings it down at the cost of his own life. He was a horrible person yet he didn't deserve to die because of the kindness he shows to Jack and Lucy.

  • 9.

Explain Lucy. Lucy thinks she is a princess because her father tells her so. For that reason she is snobby and bossy to her mother and father. She is the reason the vikings catch her and her big brother Jack. She is spoiled by her father. I think that Lucy is not naturally mean, but her father is the real source of her meanness.

  • 10.

Explain the Viking code of battle. The Norseman motto is fame never dies meaning  it doesn't matter if you die only if your stories live on long after you. Viking's also belived that when you died at war you went to Valhalla ruled over by Oden, a viking god. They also belived that it was honorable to kill innocents as long as you went to battle and did not take a less painful road.
