The essay has 3 main parts, intro, body paragraphs and a conclusion.
Explanation
This quiz will test to see whether you understood the concepts from Book 2 in EL121.
Conclusions are very important. To write a good conclusion, you need to do 3 things. Please see the picture attached here.
Use quotes to help strengthen your ideas, not replace them.
Writing is a skill. To improve any skill, you need to practice. Practice makes perfect! It's like learning how to drive a car. You can read a hundred books about driving, but the only thing that will make you a better driver is actually sitting behind the wheel and driving. Writing is no different than that. The more you practice, the better you will be. Reading books will also help you in the long run.
Quoting = Taking exactly what was said or written and putting it between "quotation marks". Paraphrasing = Rewriting the original ideas into your own words.
Plagiarism is the act of presenting the work of others as your own. It's an academic crime. When you don't include the references, it is as if you have stolen the ideas as well.
If you plagiarize and attempt to steal the work of others, we will fail you with a smile on our face :)
The thesis is the most important sentence in the introduction. Without it, the reader will not know what your essay is talking about.
Transition words are words like 'however', 'therefore', 'in addition' 'first', 'in conclusion' and so on. These words help us connect our ideas together and gives our work a more organized feel. Use them to get better marks!
The 'Bibliography' basically tells your reader about the sources you used in your writing and gives the reader more information about them.
Stories are there for entertainment, they take us on a wild ride and entertain us with their characters, plots and wild adventures. Essays are there to educate and inform you on something.
An outline is a general plan (a skeleton) of what you want to write about in your paper or essay. It will help you organize your ideas and it’ll help highlight the most important points.
When you take an idea and write it in your own words, you still need to include the source since the idea you borrowed is not yours.
An introduction does two things: first it pulls and attracts the reader. Second,it prepares the reader for what will come in the body paragraphs.
Topic sentences are usually found in the body paragraphs in the essay. The topic sentence gives the reader the main idea of the paragraph.
The first answer is correct because it is related to the topic, it is in sentence form and it's clear. The second answer is incorrect because it is not a sentence, it looks like a title for an essay. The third answer is also incorrect because it is not related to the topic.
MLA stands for the 'Modern Language Association' and it is a standard citation style. They basically give us the rules we need for 2 things: In-text citation and the bibliography.
