The French Lieutenant's Woman is a 1969 postmodern historical fiction novel by John Fowles.
Explanation
When completing a VAT return, you tell HMRC the amount of "output tax" (tax you've charged customers on sales of goods) that you've collected, and the amount of "input tax" (tax you've paid on purchases relating to taxable sales) that you can reclaim. You total these together, and either make a payment to HMRC or reclaim an amount from them, depending on whether you've paid more input tax than you've collected in output tax.
