Explanation
Historically, banks deducted 20% tax from interest before they paid it to you. As 20% is the basic rate of tax, this meant that the majority of people didn't need to do anything to pay the right amount of tax on interest. However, in April 2016 the government introduced a new personal savings allowance, which meant that most people don't pay tax on interest earned in bank accounts. As a result, the banks started paying interest to their customers without deducting any tax.
