Ernie was being looked at by many colleges. In the end he chose to attend Syracuse and play under head coach Ben Schwartzwalder.

Ernie Davis won the Heisman Trophy following the 1961 college season. The Heisman Trophy is awarded annually to the most outstanding player in college football. Davis became the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy, making his victory even more significant in the history of the sport.

Ernie was drafted by the Washington Redskins and soon was traded to the Cleveland Browns. It was here where he planed on playing alongside his role model Jim Brown. He was never given this chance due to his death from leukemia.
