Moses received the Ten Commandments on two tablets from God.
Explanation
This quiz is to test your knowledge of the 10 Commandments.
And one of them, a doctor of the Law, putting him to the test, asked him, "Master, which is the great commandment in the Law?" Jesus said to him, "'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind.' This is the greatest and the first commandment. And the second is like it, 'Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.' On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets." (Matthew 22:35-40)
There are certainly positive commandments (Honor your father and mother) and negative commandments (You shall not...). But the two major divisions of commandments are those about loving God and about loving others (your neighbor).
1) You shall worship the Lord your God, Him only shall you serve. 2) You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain. 3) Keep holy the Lord’s Day. These commandments are about loving and respecting God.
Moses received the Ten Commandments while the Israelites were wandering in the desert. This was after they were released from slavery in Egypt by the Pharaoh, and before they arrived in the Promised Land 40 years later.
4) Honor your father and your mother. 5) You shall not kill. 6) You shall not commit adultery. 7) You shall not steal. 8) You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 9) You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. 10) You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods. These commandments are about loving and respecting other people.
Jesus gives us the Two Great Commandments, which are found in Matthew 22.
3 commandments (in the Catholic interpretation) are about loving God.
Jews look to the Old Testament for a long list of specific rules.
Coveting is wanting something that isn't yours. To desire your neighbor's wife is lust. To desire things that belong to another person is envy.
Protestants interpret "You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a graven image..." as two separate Commandments, while Catholics read it as one. Catholics interpret, "You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife," as two separate Commandments, while Protestants read it as one. Catholics look to Deuteronomy for additional clarity.
We find the Ten Commandments in the Bible twice, in Exodus and Deuteronomy. Both of these books are found in the Old Testament.
Honor your father and your mother is a positive commandment that tells us what we SHOULD do, rather than what we "shall not" do.
