The Three Dimensions of Islam

Consequently, the individual may fulfill the external requirements of being a Muslim, but miss out on the deeper, transformative aspects of faith that inspire moral and spiritual development. The Six Articles of Faith in Islam include belief in Allah, angels, scriptures, prophets, the Day of Judgment, and Qadr (divine decree). They are not part of the doctrinal beliefs outlined in the Articles of Faith, which emphasize what a Muslim must believe in rather than what they must do. When the dimension of Ihsan, which emphasizes excellence and sincerity in worship, is absent from a Muslim's practice, the rituals may become mechanical and devoid of spiritual depth. This leads to a superficial engagement with faith, where actions are performed without true understanding or connection to their significance. Consequently, the practice may turn into a series of dry rituals, lacking the transformative power that genuine belief and intention can provide, ultimately resulting in a shallow understanding of one's faith.

When one of the three dimensions—action, belief, or excellence—is absent, it creates an imbalance that distorts the understanding of Islam. Each dimension plays a crucial role in forming a holistic view of the faith. Without a balanced integration of these elements, individuals may misinterpret teachings, practices, and the essence of Islam, leading to misconceptions and a fragmented practice of the faith.
