Political Divisions of Asia

Russia is the largest country in the world, spanning both Europe and Asia. While a significant portion of its landmass lies within the Asian continent, it surpasses all other Asian countries in size. Although China and India are also large countries in Asia, they do not compare to Russia's vast expanse, which covers over 17 million square kilometers. Kazakhstan, while sizable, is still smaller than Russia. Thus, in terms of land area, Russia holds the title as the largest country in Asia.

East Asian countries are often collectively referred to as the "Far East" due to their geographical location in relation to Europe. Historically, this term was used by Westerners to describe the easternmost regions of Asia, which includes countries like China, Japan, and Korea. The label reflects the perspective of Western explorers and traders who viewed these nations as distant and exotic. Although the term can be seen as outdated or Eurocentric, it remains a common reference in cultural and historical contexts.

Myanmar and Brunei are classified as Southeast Asian countries due to their geographical location within the Southeast Asian region. Myanmar, located to the northwest of Thailand, shares borders with India and China, while Brunei is situated on the island of Borneo, surrounded by Malaysia and the South China Sea. In contrast, Nepal and Mongolia are located in South Asia and East Asia, respectively, and are not considered part of Southeast Asia. This classification is based on cultural, historical, and geographical factors that define the region.

The USSR officially collapsed in 1991, marking the end of the Soviet Union as a political entity. This dissolution followed a series of events including economic struggles, rising nationalism among various republics, and political reforms initiated by Mikhail Gorbachev. The formal declaration of independence by several republics, culminating in the signing of the Belavezha Accords in December 1991, led to the establishment of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the recognition of these republics as independent nations.

Southwest Asian countries are commonly referred to as the Middle East due to their geographical location and cultural significance. This region encompasses a variety of nations, including those in the Arabian Peninsula, the Levant, and parts of North Africa. The term "Middle East" has historical roots and is widely used in political, economic, and social contexts to describe the interconnectedness of these countries. Thus, identifying Southwest Asia with the Middle East is accurate and reflects common usage in both academic and everyday discussions.

Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan emerged as independent nations following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Both countries are situated in Central Asia, a region that was significantly influenced by Soviet governance. The collapse of the USSR allowed these republics to assert their sovereignty and establish their own political and economic systems, distinguishing them from other regions and nations that were not part of the Soviet Union. In contrast, Georgia and Armenia are located in the South Caucasus, while Israel, Lebanon, Bahrain, and Qatar are situated in the Middle East.

Maldives is indeed the smallest country in Asia by land area, comprising around 298 square kilometers. It is an archipelago located in the Indian Ocean, made up of 26 atolls. This unique geographical composition contributes to its limited size compared to other Asian nations. Despite its small land area, Maldives is known for its rich marine biodiversity and tourism, making it a significant destination despite its modest size.
