Many people think spiders are insects. However, spiders differ from insects in a number of ways. Ants, bees, beetles, and other insects have six legs. Spiders have eight. Most insects also have wings and antennae (feelers), but spiders do not. Biologists classify spiders as arachnids.
The exoskeleton does not grow with an insect, as do the bones of a child. In time, the exoskeleton becomes too tight and must be shed. This process is called molting.
Only the true social insects have a real family life. All termites, all ants, many bees, and some wasps are social insects.
Long-horned grasshoppers hear by means of organs on their front legs.
The queen bee has a smooth, curved sting that she uses only to kill other queens. Queens do not lose their stings as do workers.
An insect breathes by means of tiny holes, called spiracles, along the sides of its body.
Bug is a common name of all insects, but true bugs belong to an order (large group) of insects called Hemiptera.
An ant can lift a weight 30 times as heavy as its body. If a 200-pound (91-kilogram) man could do as well, he could lift 3 tons (2.7 metric tons)—with his teeth.
Many other insects also make long migratory flights. The most famous are probably the locusts. They often travel in swarms so huge that they black out the sun. Scientists do not know why locusts migrate, except that they do so after building up an enormous population. Locusts do not migrate because they are hungry.
