Javert did commit suicide in the story. He was a strict enforcer of the law and had a strong belief in justice. However, when he realized that his lifelong pursuit of Jean Valjean, the protagonist, was based on a misunderstanding and that Valjean was actually a good person, it shattered his worldview. Unable to reconcile his beliefs with this new information, Javert felt a deep internal conflict and ultimately chose to end his own life as a result.
