Books vs Movies Quiz: See How You Prefer Your Stories

1. It's a rainy Saturday afternoon with nothing planned. What do you reach for first?

A novel I've been meaning to finish for weeks

A movie I've had saved on my watchlist

Either — I'd flip a coin honestly

Something else entirely — I don't really do either

2. A beloved book is being adapted into a movie. What is your first reaction?

Nervous — they'll probably ruin it

Excited — I can't wait to see it on the big screen!

Curious — it could go either way and I'm open to it

Indifferent — adaptations don't really interest me

3. How do you prefer to experience a story's characters?

Through rich inner monologue and detailed description on the page

Through an actor's performance and facial expressions

Both work equally well for me depending on the story

I don't really think about it that deeply

4. You have two hours to spare. Which sounds more appealing?

Reading uninterrupted with a cup of tea

Watching a great film from start to finish

Honestly, I'd be happy with either option

Two hours feels too short for a book and too long for a movie

5. When a story ends on a cliffhanger, what do you do?

Immediately grab the next book in the series

Search frantically for the sequel film or next episode

Look it up online — I need answers regardless of format

Shrug it off — cliffhangers don't really bother me

6. Which experience feels more immersive to you?

Getting lost in a book for hours without noticing time pass

Being completely absorbed by a visually stunning film

Both can pull me in completely — it depends on the story

Neither — I'm easily distracted no matter what

7. A friend recommends a story. What format do you hope it comes in?

A book — preferably a long one with lots of detail

A movie or series I can watch tonight

Either is fine — I'll enjoy it either way

A podcast or audiobook — something I can do while multitasking

8. How important is a musical score or soundtrack to a story?

Not very — I prefer the music I create in my own imagination

Extremely — a great score elevates everything

It's a nice bonus but not essential to my enjoyment

I usually tune it out anyway

9. What do you do when you finish a really great story?

Sit quietly and let it sink in, then write a review or journal about it

Look up behind-the-scenes content, interviews, or fan theories

Call a friend immediately to talk about it

Move on pretty quickly to the next thing

10. Which complaint do you relate to more?

'The movie completely left out my favourite subplot!'

'The book version is so slow compared to the film!'

I see both sides — each format has its own pacing needs

I don't really compare the two — they're separate things

11. How do you feel about reading a book after watching its movie adaptation?

I always read the book — it's always richer and more detailed

Rarely — if the movie was great, the book feels redundant

Sometimes — if the movie intrigued me enough to go deeper

Never — once I know the ending, why bother?

12. Which setting sounds like your ideal story experience?

Curled up alone in bed with a lamp and a thick novel

In a cinema with a big screen, surround sound, and popcorn

On the sofa with friends watching a film or sharing a book club pick

Anywhere with headphones and an audiobook

13. What matters most to you in a story?

Deep, complex characters with rich internal worlds

Stunning visuals, atmosphere, and emotional performances

A compelling plot that keeps me hooked no matter the format

Humour and entertainment above all else

14. How do you feel about special effects and CGI in storytelling?

Unnecessary — my imagination does it better anyway

Amazing when done well — they can make a story truly epic

Fine in moderation — they should serve the story, not overshadow it

I barely notice them either way

15. If you could only choose one for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Books — without hesitation, every single time

Movies — I could never give up the cinema experience

This question is genuinely impossible for me to answer

Neither — I'd find another way to get my stories
