The creation of pickleball stemmed from a classic case of “we have nothing to do.” In 1965, on Bainbridge Island, Washington, a group of dads—including Joel Pritchard and Bill Bell—tried to entertain their kids. They grabbed random sports gear, lowered the badminton net, and improvised a game. This moment of spontaneous parenting sparked the birth of a new sport, which would later evolve into one of America’s fastest-growing pastimes. One of the most widely shared stories is that the Pritchard family dog, named “Pickles,” would chase stray balls during the early games, hence the name. However, there's debate—another version suggests the term came from “pickle boats” in crew races, which were made up of leftover rowers—just like the sport itself used leftover gear. The dog version is catchier and became lore. Either way, it speaks to the quirky, informal roots of the sport.

Retirement communities in Florida and Arizona were the first to adopt pickleball as a low-impact, social sport. This demographic helped grow the sport’s visibility. The easy rules, small court size, and moderate intensity made it perfect for older adults. Its popularity snowballed as community centers and schools also began installing courts.
