The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the core of every computer system. The BIOS setup program features a list of options in the configuration utility that can be tweaked to make the CPU work more efficiently. At the same time, one has to bear in mind that any incorrect configuration of these settings can make the system unstable or even damage the installed components. Therefore, extreme caution has to be exercised while changing these options.
The following are common CPU Setting in the Setup program:
- CPU Name/Type
The BIOS will automatically detect and display the type of CPU in the PC, including the manufacturer (e.g., Intel Pentium, AMD K6). This value cannot be changed.
- CPU Operating Speed
This setting allows you to directly choose the operating speed of your processor. When this value is set, the BIOS will automatically set the “External Clock” and “Multiplier Factor” values for you, and locks them to restrict any changes. For example, setting this value to “166” will set the external clock to 66 MHz, and the multiplier to 2.5X. To manually control the external clock and multiplier factor values, you must set this parameter to “User Defined”.
