Problem

Sven Hoffman, the program manager of the Swiss National Work and Health Program, found himself grappling with an outdated and burdensome assessment process. The program was heavily reliant on essay writing, a method that proved overwhelming for students and faculty alike. As Sven put it, "From the students' perspective, that was a little bit overwhelming with writing essays, 20-30 pages each. And then for us, it was really a significant burden to dig in and work through all these essays and give personal feedback on every page."

Solution

In search of a more efficient and modern solution, the program turned to ProProfs Quiz Maker. This tool allowed them to create online quizzes and exams that students could take as part of their pre-assignment phase and module exams. Sven explained, "We use ProProfs Quiz for the pre-assignment phase. So this is for the online or the distance phase of the teaching. And also every module concludes with a module assessment, making sure that the students really got what they are supposed to learn in. That's also what we will be using ProProfs for."

Result

The implementation of ProProfs Quiz Maker led to a significant reduction in workload for both students and faculty. The students found the new method of assessment less overwhelming and more systematic. Sven noted, "We had a way less workload with correcting or giving feedback on the pre-assignments and partly on the exams. And also from the students' perspective, they know what to expect."

Quiz Maker provided valuable insights into student performance and the effectiveness of their teaching methods. "We get a good awareness who actually were able to learn what. So we have an individual level on the students and gives the students what they really need to perform to develop," Sven added.

As Sven summed it up, "From my perspective, what I can feel is it's way less workload for the quizzes, for the assessments than it used to be."
