A patient may need to have a blood transfusion due to loss of blood. If a person has anemia that means that the patient’s blood does not contain enough iron. Sometimes, severe anemic patients must receive a blood transfusion because of their deadly situation that they are in. First, the nurse must make sure the patient is who he or she says he or she is by identification. The tubes should be washed.

Before the transfusion is done, the compatibility test must be done to make sure the blood is the same type as the recipient’s blood. A reaction may take place, so the nurse should monitor the patient. The nurse should also monitor his or her vital signs and document.

A nurse should first check blood bag against the client's information and check the packed RBCs for the date and abnormalities.
