Let’s answer the first question about what makes food systems geographical. But first, let’s define food systems. It is the combined process and infrastructure use to feed a population. This includes growing and harvesting crops, processing and manufacturing these crops, branding and marketing the manufactured products and transporting it to different areas for public consumption. Food systems are geographical because it is concerned with the patterns of food production and its consumption on a local to global scale.

Now on to the second question about why it is important to study food systems from a geographical point of view is because knowing, studying and eventually understanding these patterns help geographers to know and understand the relationships between the developed and developing countries – mostly they check the unequal relationships between these countries.
