It is called a pie chart because it resembles how a pie would be sliced. William Playfair receives credit for the idea of a pie chart in his 1801 work Statistical Breviary.

They are mainly used on math tests, mass media, and businesses. Although useful in these fields, they have been criticized for being difficult to use to compare data between them and researchers recommending using bar or line charts instead.
