Cartography is the discipline or study of the production, conception, and dissemination of maps. In short, cartography is basically the entire process of mapping. It is a complex field that centers on the process of making maps. It includes everything from gathering information, evaluating data, and processing it to become a graphical and informative representation of a map.

The art of cartography is a discipline that dates back to the prehistoric depiction of fishing and hunting territories. The earliest known map is a wall painting that depicts the prehistoric Anatolian city of Catalhoyuk which dates back to the 7th millennium BCE.

Cartography is the drawing or compiling of maps. The explorers and surveyors go out and make the measurements and gather the information from which the cartographers draw their maps.
