Izod impact testing is a conventional method of calculating the impact resistance of a material. Charpy impact testing is also a traditional method of determining the resistance of a material against abrupt load or impact. In the Izod test, the material was affixed perpendicular at the bottom, with the notch facing the striker.

The striker swings downward, and it hits the test material in the center, at the bottom of its swing, and it is free at the top. The Charpy method includes striking test material with a striker attached at the end of the pendulum, which is secured horizontally in place at either end. The striker hits the middle of the test material behind the notch. This method possesses a notch across one of the larger faces.
