NTSC stands for National Television System Committee, which is the television broadcasting system used in North America and Japan. PAL stands for Phase Alternate Line. The significant difference between the PAL and NTSC version is compatibility with older television sets. The NTSC PS3 will only work with NTSC television sets. The PAL PS3 will only work with PAL television sets.

The NTSC PS3 cannot play PAL PS2 games when connected to an SDTV and vice versa. The NTSCPS3 has thirty frames per second, while PAL provides twenty- five frames per second. Both work equally well with HDTV sets and LCD screens.
