People started celebrating friendship day after the United States congress deliberated on the need to have a special day for people to celebrate their friends. This was done by the United States congress in 1935 and after which it was officially declared that friendship day would be observed on the first Sunday of August every year.

Although, in the 1990s, more activities were done for Friendship Day and more acknowledgments too. For instance, Winnie the Pooh became the mascot in the sense of Friendship Day, and it became a little more accessible.
