An enzyme is within the class of organic compounds or molecules known as proteins or polypeptides. It is a substance which is produced by a living organism that acts as a catalyst for generating specific biomedical reactions. Enzymes play a major role in reactions at the cellular level.

Enzymes make chemical reactions happen faster without themselves being changed in the process. In chemistry, an organic compound is generally any chemical compound that contains carbon. Among the biological macromolecules, enzymes belong in the category of proteins. Enzymes are completely composed of specific organic proteins.
