Valentine’s Day didn’t start out as only being a holiday that belonged exclusively to lovers. It started out being a Christian holiday to honor the life and martyrdom of St. Valentine. St. Valentine was arrested and killed by the Romans for performing weddings and ministering. These were forbidden by Rome. Emperor Claudius II passed a law that stated young men were not to marry. They were better off serving as soldiers for Rome.

During the Middle Ages, lovers started to exchange flowers, cards that were handmade, and candy gifts to show their affection for each other. Today, a lot of these traditions are still being observed, as lovers send bouquets of flowers and chocolates to each other on Valentine’s Day. Nonetheless, Valentine’s Day isn’t for couples only, as it is a holiday to celebrate the many loves and friendships that we each do have in our lives. Love comes in many forms and not just of the romantic variety.
